Klaus Ospald, born in Münster/Westphalia, studied composition at the University of Music in Detmold and at the University of Music in Würzburg, where he completed his studies with a master class diploma.
In 1985 he received the scholarship at the Cité des Artes, and in 1987 he received the first sponsorship award from the state capital Stuttgart. In the same year he took additional studies with Helmut Lachenmann.
He was awarded numerous awards, including the Bavarian State Prize and the composition prize of the SWR Symphony Orchestra Baden-Baden/Freiburg as part of the “Donaueschinger Musiktage”.
His works are played by internationally renowned performers and orchestras, such as Ensemble Contrechamps, Ensemble Modern, Musikfabrik, Collegium Novum Zurich and the Arditti String Quartet.
Important podiums for contemporary music such as the “International Summer Course for New Music Darmstadt”, the “Donaueschinger Musiktage”, “MaerzMusik”, “Munich Biennale”, “Warsaw Autumn” or the “Witten Days for New Chamber Music” premiered his works.
In 2013/14 Klaus Ospald was Composer in Residence at the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin, and in 2017/18 he was a scholarship holder at the Internationales Künstlerhaus Bamberg, Villa Concordia.
In 2019 Klaus Ospald won the Happy New Ears Composer Prize of the Hans and Gertrud Zender Foundation. The city of Leipzig and the association Eisler-Haus Leipzig e.V. awarded Klaus Ospald the “International Hanns Eisler Scholarship of the City of Leipzig 2022”.
