Composer Chico Mello was born in 1957 in Curitiba (Brazil), where he studied medicine and music. He studied composition first with Padre Jose Penalva. In the late 70’s and early 80’s he received important musical impulses from Latin-American and European composers at the "Cursos latinoamericanos de música contemporanea" (Brazil, Uruguay). He continued his composition studies in São Paulo with Hans Joachim Koellreutter, and moved to Berlin on the late 80’s where he studied at the University of the Arts in Berlin with Dieter Schnebel and Witold Szalonek. Later, he obtained a PhD in Musicology at the Technische Universität Dortmund.
Chico Mello works as composer, performer and singer on experimental, Brazilian popular Music as well as in music theater and intercultural projects. He has received grants from Institutions such as SWR Freiburg’s Heinrich-Strobel-Stiftung, Berlin Senate for culture, Cité international des arts (Paris), Villa Aurora (Los Angeles), Civitella Rainieri (Italy). His work has been performed at renowned new music festivals such as Donaueschinger Musiktagen, Musica Viva (Munique), MärzMusik (Berlin), Angelica (Bologna), Other Minds (São Francisco), Ultima (Oslo) and Bienal de Música Contemporânea (Rio de Janeiro). He was co-curator of the “Oficina de Música (Curitiba), “Escuta” festival (Rio de Janeiro), MärzMusik (Berlin).
