Joel Järventausta (b. 1995) is a Finnish composer currently completing a Masters in Composition, as a Humphrey Searle Scholar, at the Royal College of Music in London. He holds a BA in Music with 1st class honours from the University of York and was awarded the Nicola LeFanu Composition Prize 2016 by the Department of Music. Joel is currently studying with Dai Fujikura and in the past three years he has studied under Dr. Martin Suckling, Prof. Roger Marsh and Dr. John Stringer, also attending a masterclass with Steven Daverson.
2nd Prize winner of the London Ear Festival Composer‘s Competition 2016, Joel received a performance of his solo cello work "racing thoughts" by Rohan de Saram at the Cello Factory, London. Joel’s solo flute work "Landscapes I ‘Odin’s Hill’" will be performed in Berlin by Markus Wenninger and in London by Simon Desorgher as part of the 19th London New Wind Festival. His other works have been performed by the Chimera Ensemble, cellist Jari Piper and the Red Note Ensemble and workshopped by the Andersson, Gallois & de Saram Trio, violinist Peter Sheppard Skærved and Quatuor Diotima. His works so far have been performed in UK and Alaska, USA.
Joel was recently granted a membership as one of the youngest ever composers in the Society of Finnish Composers (Suomen Säveltäjät ry). In 2015, Joel’s first orchestral piece "stony mountains to rise" was chosen as a finalist in the PARMA Student Composer’s Competition and to be published by in New Hampshire (USA). He also received the 2015 Chimera Undergraduate Commission at the University of York. Joel was awarded the 1st reserve place on the International Einojuhani Rautavaara Chamber Choir Composition Workshop & Competition (Finland) and reserve places for "stony mountains to rise" & "Sävyt" in UNM Festival Aarhus 2016 Call for Scores (Denmark). His second orchestral work "Cantus" is to be programmed by the Sydney Contemporary Orchestra (Australia) in one of their future concerts.
As a conductor Joel has worked with the Chimera Ensemble, recently conducting the UK premiere of Ana Sokolovic‘ "Ciaccona", the UK premiere of Jean-Luc Fafchamps‘ "S2 (Thà‘)" (Ryegrass), Fausto Romitelli‘s "Flowing Down too Slow" and Patrick Jones‘ "Unfurl". He has also conducted several student works with the ensemble.
