Juozapaitis, Jurgis
composer
Jurgis Juozapaitis was born in 1942 in Lithuania near Siauliai. He was educated at the Lithuanian State Conservatoire (now Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre), majoring in composition under Prof. Julius Juzeliunas, in 1968. His artistic achievements have been recognized by a number of awards from the Lithuanian Ministry of Culture, including the Lithuanian State Award for his “Rex Symphony” (1978) and the Lithuanian National Arts and Culture Prize (2002). His “Tower Counterpoints” for symphony orchestra garnered First Prize at the International Composition Competition ‘Sinfonia Baltica’ in Riga, in 2004.
“The music of Jurgis Juozapaitis moves at en unhurried pace; it lingers aside from the urban hustle and bustle. The composer is perhaps one of the last of his kind who still feels the urge to listen to nocturnal whispers, to raise his eyes to the sky and see music there. He reads melodies from feather clouds, renders the language of flowers into notes, and hears rhythms in the rain. When it comes to putting his perceptions and musical ideas into shape, he concentrates on the feeling of music and the spirit it conveys, overall sound and colour, before his focus shifts to the intensity of movement, rhythmic and melodic counterpoints, and changing textures.” – Asta Pakarklyte
