Birke J. Bertelsmeier studied under Wolfgang Rihm at the Karlsruhe University of Music. She also completed her master's degree in musicology. She has received numerous awards and many important scholarships, including the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation's Grant for Composition. Her works are performed by well-known musicians and ensembles at major festivals in many countries, including the Impuls Festival Graz, the Heidelberg Spring Festival, the Munich Biennale and the Witten Days for New Chamber Music. She has been given teaching assignments for youth seminars for composition and is in demand as a juror for new music. Her catalogue of works includes music theater and film music as well as orchestral works, chamber music and solo pieces. Many German radio stations have broadcast recordings of her works and presented the composer in interviews and portraits.
