Gerhard E. Winkler studied composition at the Mozarteum with Helmut Eder and in Vienna with Erich Urbanner, and at the same time musicology, philosophy and psychology at the universities of Salzburg and Vienna. In 1993, he spent time studying at the IRCAM/Centre Pompidou in Paris. In 1994/95, he was a guest artist at the ZKM | Center for Art and Media in Karlsruhe. Since 1999, he has been a freelance composer. He developed the concept of real-time scores and interactive computer environments for musicians. He also continued these experiences in score-based works. His works are performed at many important festivals throughout Europe (Wien Modern, Donaueschingen, Munich Opera Biennale, IRCAM/Centre Pompidou, Salzburg Festival, Styrian Autumn).
