Hidalgo, Manuel
After a brief visit to the medical faculty, Manuel Hidalgo studied composition, first with Juan-Alfonso García in Granada, from 1976 to 1978 with Hans Ulrich Lehmann in Zurich and from 1979 to 1984 with Helmut Lachenmann in Hanover and Stuttgart. In his compositions Hidalgo works with traditional tones and sounds. In doing so, he plays intensively with conventional expectations, which he disappoints. Hidalgo was awarded the Beethoven Prize of the City of Bonn in 1983. After his beginnings in pop music, he wrote numerous commissioned works for new music festivals, including Gaudeamus in Amsterdam, the Donaueschinger Music Days and the Venice Biennale.
