José Maria Sánchez-Verdú studied conducting, musicology and composition at the Real Conservatorio Superior de Música de Madrid. This was followed by composition studies with Franco Donatoni in Siena and with Hans Zender in Frankfurt am Main. He taught composition at various universities in Germany and Spain. Scholarships and residencies have taken him to the Carinthian Summer Festival (Austria), the Festival Internacional de Musica Contemporanea de Lima (Peru), the Experimental Studio for Acoustic Art (SWR, Freiburg), the Centro Nacional de Difusión Musical in Spain and the Dresden Philharmonic. Sánchez-Verdú's works are often commissioned, for example for the Teatro Real Madrid, the Venice Biennale, the Munich Biennale, the Staatsoper Unter den Linden (Berlin), the Konzerthaus Berlin, the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, the WDR Symphony Orchestra Cologne and the Schwetzinger SWR Festival.
